Lars grumbled after Sergio exited the common room. “He’s making us the sacrificial lambs. Why he thinks this will work is beyond me.”

“It’s not going to work,” Jenna said. “I’m afraid your friend has thrown you to the wolves. You were right, Lars. He wants to get out and we are the distraction.”

“I knew it. He made me feel like I was crazy for even suggesting it but why would I expect anything else from him after what happened in Alpine.”

Jenna frowned. “What happened? What do you mean?”

Lars’ expression changed and he went red in the cheeks. “Um. It’s nothing. Look, what do we do?”

“We adjust the plan. It can’t be us causing the argument. They’ll take us in with them. Give me a minute, just be ready to leave immediately. We won’t have long.” Jenna got up with her plate and went to the back of the line for more food. It rarely occurred. People didn’t get seconds in this place. While they had enough supplies in the hospital to last them several months, they still had to be careful. As there were already too many mouths to feed. She’d seen the ones who’d tried it. Those who were worked hard and made to feel like it was a privilege to be there by Lynch. In some ways Lynch was right, it was better than being out there but hiding behind walls and soldiers would only last so long. In the short time Jenna had been there she’d heard rumors swirling. She wasn’t the only one unsatisfied with the status quo. Being cooped up twenty-four hours a day, being followed around by soldiers and made to eat the bare minimum only stretched so far. One of these people was an orderly by the name of James Whitefield. A large man whose mere presence put the soldiers on edge, he had already voiced his complaints to Judith, the lady behind the counter serving. Only two days ago he’d kicked up a fuss and slammed his tray down demanding more after he was served up half of his usual serving. Fortunately, Judith was able to deescalate the situation before the soldiers moved in. Jenna saw him across the room, seated with a few others. He was once again complaining about the place. She planned to use that to her advantage.

Jenna looked over at Lars who was leaning back in his seat.

“Hi Judith,” Jenna said as she reached the front of the line.

“Back again, are we.”

“I hate to ask as I know the rules but I was wondering if you might be able to make an exception, just this one time. For some reason I’m more hungry than usual. I’m guessing it’s all those tests they’ve been running on me. It really takes it out of you. You know?”

Judith grimaced and looked at the soldiers. “I don’t know. I would like to but…”

“Ah, it’s okay. By the way, it looks like they might have found a formula for the cure. I’m going today to have one final test.
